Walk with Jesus

Field-RoadWhat is it?

“Walk with Jesus” is a nine month prayer journey beginning in September. It is  based on the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. The purpose of the Spiritual Exercises is to encounter God through the person of Jesus Christ; and to become like Christ in our words and actions as we grow in intimacy with God. Rueben Job says, “It is in Jesus that we have the clearest picture of who God is, what God does, and how God invites us to live as God’s children.

The Exercises are divided into four movements or “weeks” designed around the life of Jesus:

  • Encountering the unconditional love of God
  • Accompanying Jesus on His mission and ministry revealed in the gospels
  • Being with Jesus in His suffering and death
  • Experiencing the joy and sharing in the hope of the risen Lord.

The Exercises are a “school of prayer” made up of prayers and meditations grounded in Scripture intending to fuel a desire to know and be companions of Jesus as we serve God with our whole lives. To understand Ignatius and the purpose of the Exercises is to know his motto: Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam, or “For the Greater Glory of God.” The following is a description of the Exercises written by a Jesuit:

The purpose of the Spiritual Exercises has been described in many ways. St. Ignatius says they are intended to help one discover one’s true self and to put such order into one’s life that all decision will be made free of any unhealthy attachments…Another and more over-arching way to consider the Spiritual Exercises is as a process of praying the Gospels to become identified with Jesus Christ in loving and serving God in all things. Personal renewal, becoming deepened in prayer, and Spirit filled decision making are the gifts, the fruits of this experience.
